Soft Landing Questions(From US)

Return tracker should have been activated within a few days of approval. You could try sending an email to the consulate/office you sent your passports to. Mine was shipped ~2 days after the approval (LA Consulate).

Yeah it’s been 8 days since approval. I will shoot them an email.

Is there a phone number to reach them ?

+1 to this experience - I mentioned this to the officer processing our landing and learned that it was in fact possible to have a goods to follow list appear later - when you arrive with the intent to permanently settle.

Hello,
During application, I had put Vancouver as my port of entry but I would like to do a soft landing at Toronto. Is it advisable to do so?

Yes, thats not a problem

How long was your OPT valid when you are coming to US. Did the CBP officer checked the expiration date of EAD. My OPT is expiring in a month and i am planning to do soft landing and come back in a day.

Hi all, glad to have found this forum.

We will likely be doing soft landing by private car at Peace Bridge (Blaine) within the next six months.

We are US citizens and Nexus card holders, and currently cross the border every week to visit our son, who is a Canadian citizen. We will use his address for the PR cards.

Once we do the soft landing we will return to the US to prepare for our permanent move, but will continue needing to cross the border weekly for these visits to babysit our grandson. What do you think is the best approach to doing this for an indeterminate period of time? Should we just explain the situation to the agent? Can we continue using Nexus, or do we need to update or reapply to Nexus once we are declared PRs?

If the Principal Applicant does soft landing first and then returns to the US, can the dependent then do an independent soft landing the following week?

Hello. Below are my responses. I did a soft landing by road in July 2019 and I can share my perspective based on my experience.

  1. It should be fine. It would be good if you have someone you know within Canada that you can get the PR cards mailed out to. I went with a lawyer in Canada and got it mailed to them and eventually they mailed it to me in the US. If you don’t, the only other way you can enter Canada is with a PRTD during your final move. That is a fairly elaborate process.

  2. Ensure that you prepare and bring a detailed list of goods you would bring with you and insist to the CBSA officer to fill out and give you the customs cargo control document. When I did my soft landing by road in Vancouver, they said I could do it when I finally immigrate to Canada and when I finally landed in Canada, the customs officer asked me for the document and I explained what happened in Vancouver and they said Vancouver border office must have done it. Fortunately, the officer was very decent and he had to make some calls and eventually let us in.

  3. This is again a grey area. You better not give any indication that you’ll come after a year or 2. They might think that you aren’t taking the move seriously and might not end up doing it. Tell that you’re working on getting a job, selling a house etc but don’t give out any specific timelines or it might get you in trouble.

  4. None that I can think of. Should be fine.

Hi,

I have got the CoPR and planning to land soon to complete the process. I don’t plan to stay and would be coming back to the US on same day. Since I dont have an address and dont know anyone in Canada , is that necessary for me to provide on when I land? Can I tell the officer that I can initiate the PR card process later when I am back. Also, in general what are the steps I need to follow if I am coming back on the same date of landing.

If I land , come back to US I understand I can apply for PRTD to travel to Canada. Will doing a soft landing and returning back without PR card affect PR status in anyway?

Proof of Funds

Do I still need to have the 12699 CAD in my bank account if I do a soft landing? Is the proof of funds obtained 6 months ago enough or can the proof of funds be obtained 10 - 15 days before landing?

Thanks,
Nanda

  • Not needed to provide an address as soon as you land. You can call up CIC once you have an address and get your card delivered there.
  • Soft landing not an issue.
  • Recommended to have docs with you for proof of funds. From my experience they do not verify it during landing, but… your mileage may vary.
  • PRTD takes time (weeks or even months depending on where you apply). If you can cross the border or in your own/rental car, you can use your COPR to complete entry with the Canadian Border Officers.

Search the forums, you can find a lot of info on these topics.

Hi Guys,

I am flying this week to Toronto for my soft landing and planning to return to the US in a day. My STEM OPT is valid till June but my F1 expired last year. I am working full time but I do not have H1-B yet. I am going to try and use AVR to re-enter the US. Should I anticipate any problems at immigration on my return?

Thanks in advance!

Hey there,

I have a question pertaining to the CBSA officer not filing your PR at your time of landing. You state that "I again asked her if there was anyway she could process my PR Card (wanted to try my luck) since I would most likely do a landing after my CoPR expires.
What ever happened after you came back to permanently land? Was your COPR expired?
I am planning to do a very similar thing you did with crossing at the border, but not permanently moving at the time, but my COPR will be expired. Does that matter once you’ve processed everything with them?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I hope youre enjoying Canada!

Hey there,

When you did your soft landing, you obviously went before your COPR expired ? So despite them not completing your PR status, did that matter? Did you do your permanent landing after COPR expiration date? Were you given a number/ code to update IRCC in regard to your PR status?
Thank you for all your help!
Leah

Hi Guys
Does anybody know if anybody can still enter Canada from the border from US by car?
Can we still take our personal car or do we need to take a rental car if somebody wants to go for a month there?
or Can we still import our car in current situation if we want to move permanently there?

note: This is not for soft landing. The person already landed last year and has PR card already.

Hey Guys,
Today on 30th march, I did my PR landing in Vancouver although the port of entry was Calgary. I tried to go to Calgary but flights got cancelled. The airlines let me in when they swiped my passport (It had one time entry visa stamp). Travelers need eTA docs otherwise. So, those who can get a flight which doesn’t get cancelled can finish the process.
Process was smooth. I had prepared my comprehensive GTF and GA lists separately with pictures, Sl # etc. They were not interested in my Proof of Funds though.
I do have to be in quarantine for the next 14 days or I could be fined up-to 1 million CAD. Booked an airbnb for that purpose. That’s one thing you need to do if you are traveling right now. The flight was empty. 5-6 passengers all together. Was wearing gloves + masks all the times.

Congrts… Thanks for update… Why did you say PR landing in ā€œVancouverā€ ?
You landed in Calgary so you completed landing process in Calgary airport… Isn’t it

Are you going back to US after 14 days or how many days?
Good thing you told me about airbnb… I was thinking if hotels are available these days if somebody travels to Canada.

No. I landed in Vancouver. I couldn’t find a flight to Calgary and my landing expiry was 4th April. Had to land wherever I could or would have lost all that work.
Will go to Calgary from here first. But right now have to be in quarantine for 14 days

Oh Ok… thanks… read it again properly…
Why is Calgary Port of entry?
Have you taken provincial nomination?

No. Express entry. I just prefer the underdog cities. :joy:

How are you feeling now after travelling…

How did you book airbnb? Did you create account on airbnb.ca or airbnb.com?
When I am trying to book then people are asking me from where I am travelling or if I travelled outside in last 30 days…
